Wonder Woman would be the first to bop someone upside the head if he were looking at her when he’s got his arm around his girlfriend. “I would never have tried to play a predatory female,” Carter continues. She finds this ridiculous, in part because she says she “never played Wonder Woman. Her star ceremony is set for April 3.Ĭarter has spoken before about how she was warned not to take the role because other women would be jealous of her. Now the singer-actress, who has been known to publicly ban trolls who leave insulting comments on her fan pages (“I think I was anti-bullying before there was any policy that people could speak up for themselves”), is no longer flying around in an invisible plane but instead leaving her mark on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. One of the reasons that the character - and, by default, Carter herself - is so endearing is that while she doesn’t have time for nonsense, she will stop and give you a hug. “I guess if there’s ever a role that was meant for me, it was Wonder Woman,” Carter says. So it’s no wonder that Lynda Carter, the blue-eyed, raven-haired star who played the heroine and role model (aka Diana Prince) for three seasons on the 1970s CBS series “Wonder Woman,” would embody so many of the same qualities. But most writers these days have opted to ignore it, because it's stupid. With her lasso of truth and her determination for justice, the character of Wonder Woman has always aimed to right society’s wrongs - a feminist and pacifist who commands respect as she thinks of ways to save the world that don’t require her fists. The jet popped up a few times here and there, most notably in Phil Jimenez's run (as he was obsessed with the Golden Age Wonder Woman). Instead, Hermes granted her speed and flight. It was a useless relic of an era long passed, and no longer interesting. But, in 1987, when DC gave the project to reboot Wonder Woman to George Perez, he decided to mostly do away with the jet. Especially because of the TV series, where she used the invisible jet, the comics wanted it around. In the Silver Age (or bronze age.?), Diana was given the ability to drift on wind currents, but she still needed a way to actually get into the air. This showed that the Amazons, a peaceful loving society, could come up with technology well above and beyond that of Man's world. But just having a jet is hardly interesting, so they took it a step further and made it both invisible and controlled by her thoughts. Diana needed a way story device to be able to get to and from Paradise Island easily. She could run faster than a normal human, but not as fast as The Flash who could run on water. Long answer: In the Golden Age all the way up to the 1987 reboot, Diana could not fly. Medium answer: To show that a female-led society could have technology well above and beyond what the male-led society could come up with invisible planes that don't make the riders invisible, mental radios, telepathic communication, healing rays, et cetera.
